There are four major standards of Wireless Router – b, g, n and ac. The performance of any router depends on these standards only. Now, all the standards and types of router are clear to you. But, you cannot take a sound decision just on the basis of the speed of router. There are many more things to consider, such as Band of Wi-Fi Router, security, number of ports, Internal or external Antenna and USB options. Among all of these points, the selection of band of Wi-Fi Router needs special attention. There are two bands of Wi-Fi router – single and dual-band. Let us understand the basic difference between both of them.
Do you know that broadcasting of the wireless routers is done on a radio band? Some of the new N routers can broadcast on not just only on one, but two bands. These are labeled as dual band routers. The basic difference b/w them is that single –band routers use only a single spectrum of 2.4 GHz, while dual-band routers can broadcast simultaneously on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz spectrum frequencies. So now the question arises, which one is better? As the dual-band router has the capability to work on two frequencies, so it is much better. So, if you want a router to work on your not so smart bandwidth supporting devices, and that too on a cheaper price, go for single-band router. And if your devices are very smart to support all bandwidths and you are ready to shed a few more pennies, go for a dual-band router. Personally, I will suggest purchasing a dual-band router, because sooner or later you’re gonna get new smart high-tech devices. So, when you do that you will not feel the urge to purchase a new router again.
If you are looking for a new router, we suggest to strictly avoid 1st generation standards, as now they are way behind in the race. If you are looking for a medium performance and low budget wireless router, go for a g-based router. If you are an advanced and heavy internet user, and not any novice, go for a fast and wide range connection as offered by N-type routers. Again, the same conditions apply while deciding the frequency of the router. For an occasional and limited band user purchasing a 5 GHz router makes no sense. So keep your budget and the level of use in mind before making a purchase and go through all the considerations highlighted above to make a sound and informed decision.
While choosing a right router you must keep in mind about the wireless networking standard because the internet speed varies as per different wireless standard.
