Things to Consider Before Purchasing a Wireless Router - Wifi Router:

In today's tech-savvy world, wireless routers are being used in homes, apartments, and in official spaces etc. so, it is essential to have a router that should functions well in terms of internet speed and with a proper network. Wi-Fi routers are provided by the internet services provider whether in free of cost or with payment but usually it comes with fewer features and of course it works well but you can improve the performance of your Wi-Fi router by upgrading it by buying a router from the manufacturing units because here you can find the extra features along with your Wi-Fi router such include parental control, file, and printer sharing etc. D-Link and Belkin brands satisfy these additional features.

There are two ways in which you can get internet connection from a router:

  1. If your cable company is your ISP: ISP stands for Internet Service Provider. So, if your cable company is your ISP, than a cable modem will be used to attach the router. This cable modem will provide internet access.
  2. If any other service provider is your ISP: Verizon, FIOS etc. are some of the service providers that distribute internet networks. So, if we sign up for such services, they provide us with a single box broadband modem to which the router is attached and we get internet connection through it.

Thus, it is clear that a router has both the capabilities of working with a wire or without a wire. Wired routers are also called Ethernets. Both of these routers have their pros and cons. While wired connections are faster and secure, wireless routers are easy to use with multiple devices. Ease of use is now the trend of this era. So, a wireless router is much better than a wired router, especially when you do not sit at one place in your home.

So, when now you have opted for a wireless router, it is necessary to know which specifications of the router will be suitable for you and to your home conditions. To take an informed decision, it is good to understand the standards and types of wireless router.

Types and Standards of Wireless Routers – B/G/N/AC:

There are four major standards of Wireless Router – b, g, n and ac. The performance of any router depends on these standards only. It is important to note that these standards differ very significantly from each other. If we go into the technical part, these routers are referred to as 802.11g, 802.11b, 802.11n and 802.11ac.

Four major standards of Wireless routers - b,g,n,c

Let go separately into the specifications of these standards:

  1. 802.11b: As it is the 1st generation standard, it offers a very low data speed of 11 Mbps. It is slowest of all the standards and the strength of signal provided by it is also very weak and short ranged.
  2. 802.11g: It offers 54 Mbps data speed. As compared with 802.11b, it has more security and signal strength.
  3. 802.11n: It provides an amazing 300Mbps speed. In some cases, its data speed exceeds 450 Mbps also. The most important feature of them besides good range, security etc. is that it is backward compatible. It means that these n-based routers can easily accept b/g connection as well.
  4. 802.11ac: This is latest of all the routers and offers a speed greater than 802.11n routers. They are faster when in a close range. With this router you can get double streams and wider channels for sending and receiving data.

Now, all the standards and types of router are clear to you. But, you cannot take a sound decision just on the basis of the speed of router. There are many more things to consider, such as Band of Wi-Fi Router, security, number of ports, Internal or external Antenna and USB options. Among all of these points, the selection of band of Wi-Fi Router needs special attention. There are two bands of Wi-Fi router – single and dual-band. Let us understand the basic difference between both of them.

Two bands of Wi-Fi routers – Single and Dual-Band

Which Wireless Router to Buy?

Single v/s Dual-band Wireless Routers - Wifi Routers:

Do you know that broadcasting of the wireless routers is done on a radio band? Some of the new N routers can broadcast on not just only on one, but two bands. These are labeled as dual band routers. The basic difference b/w them is that single –band routers use only a single spectrum of 2.4 GHz, while dual-band routers can broadcast simultaneously on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz spectrum frequencies. So now the question arises, which one is better? As the dual-band router has the capability to work on two frequencies, so it is much better. Moreover, as it provides stable and extended Wi-Fi signal, it is the best option to be looked at. But there are two darker sides to its usage: It is costlier and if your devices are not compatible with the band this router provides, it turns useless for you.

So, if you want a router to work on your not so smart bandwidth supporting devices, and that too on a cheaper price, go for single-band router. And if your devices are very smart to support all bandwidths and you are ready to shed a few more pennies, go for a dual-band router. Personally, I will suggest purchasing a dual-band router, because sooner or later you’re gonna get new smart high-tech devices. So, when you do that you will not feel the urge to purchase a new router again.

If you are looking for a new router, we suggest to strictly avoid 1st generation standards, as now they are way behind in the race. If you are looking for a medium performance and low budget wireless router, go for a g-based router. If you are an advanced and heavy internet user, and not any novice, go for a fast and wide range connection as offered by N-type routers. Again, the same conditions apply while deciding the frequency of the router. For an occasional and limited band user purchasing a 5 GHz router makes no sense. So keep your budget and the level of use in mind before making a purchase and go through all the considerations highlighted above to make a sound and informed decision.

What Type of Router Should Get?

While choosing a right router you must keep in mind about the wireless networking standard because the internet speed varies as per different wireless standard. Generally, you may find two networking standards in the market. One is 802.11ac and another one is 802.11n. Often 802.11n standard router is being used that comes with 450 Mbps transfer rate. But as per future aspect, 802.11ac can be considered with 1 GB transfer rate.

Are there any reasons to buy a standalone router?

Commonly, you may not need to buy a standalone router when you are already getting a free router with your ISP (internet service provider). In case, if they are not offering a free router then you can buy a standalone inbuilt router (router modem) that comes with additional control and features in order to improve the performance of your internet speed. The standalone router also allows you to manage the setting as per your need (applicable only for the advanced users).

How does the router need to be?

If you need to use a router to be used within a single room area, then an average cost of routers is the best option for you.

But if you want to use a router to be used in many rooms or in a big home with more than one floor, then you need to buy a powerful router with premium costs. These premium routers do not merely boost the speed even comes with upgraded features and parental control. You can do even more with these routers such includes connecting the USB printers or external devices so as you can share the data.

What Makes Router Remarkable?

  • The connectivity of routers that enables to share the internet among the devices such as mobile, tablet, and laptop etc.
  • Wi-Fi routers always come with security firewalls and privacy factors in order to keep your connection safe and protect your crucial data.
  • Routers eternally come with ease in use process so that you may not find the difficulty while using it what you usually face while connecting your TV with several cables.

What is the difference between Wi-Fi router and Wi-Fi modem?

Modem and router are two most commonly used external devices in the computer. Many people don't know the difference between the modem and router they think both are same. You cannot directly connect your computer or laptop with the internet service provider using a cable. First, you need to connect a modem to your service provider and then you can connect your device.

Here is some differentiation that will clear the concept of modem and routers:

MODEM

ROUTER

It can be connected to one pc using ethernet port

It can connect to multiple pc via ethernet or wifi

A modem can work without a router, delivering information (such as Internet access) to a single PC.

Routers can share information between computers, but cannot connect to the internet without a modem.

A modem is a device that provides access to the Internet

Router provides access to a local network (LAN)

Provides a connection to the internet by sending and receiving data over telephone lines.

Directs the data in a network and passes the data between home computers, and between computers and the modem.

Does Not provide any security

Provides security to protect the network

How to find the best Wi-Fi extender?

Wi-Fi extenders are basically used to boost the network or extend the signal length at your home space by increasing your router's wireless range.

The above image gives an idea of how wifi extender works.

There are two frequency bands are available in the market. One is 2.4GHz (the older one) and another one is 5GHz (the latest one). So, if you are using the old one, then you need to invest in Wi-Fi extender to improve the signal performance. The Netgear EX200, D-Link DAP-1320, and ASUS RP-N53 are the best Wi-Fi extenders that enable you to enjoy the better networking experience.

3-Ways to Increase Your Router Bandwidth

  • Adjusting the channel width of the router: You can adjust the channel width for 2.4 or 5GHz bands of your router to improve the performance as per you need by configuring to 20MHz or 40MHZ. By default, your router is configured with 60MHz. If you adjust it with 20MHz, you will be able to increase the router's range but have to compromise with the data speed. On the other hand, 40MHz enable you to enjoy the higher data transfer rate but it will restrict your router's range.
  • MAC(Media Access Control Address) filtering: Every device that you use or connect to your router always has MAC address. So, you can control the internet access of devices by adding the MAC address of your devices in your router management interface.
  • Quality of service: You can improve the quality of service by giving a priority to the particular traffic such as video calls, live streaming videos and gaming etc. on your network.

Are all modems compatible with all routers?

Usually, all the modems are compatible with all the routers. But you may find a problem while connecting it because of conflicting configuration setting and sometimes modem may block the certain routers for some purpose. To resolve this problem, you need to change the configuration setting or clone the MAC address by adding one of your devices into your router interface.

Which router is right for you?

Lots of variety can be availed from the market in terms of speed, power, and other features. All you need to decide your own usage capacity and related features. Routers basically come with three tiers:

  • Basic Routers: This router supports web surfing, emails, file downloading and music streaming etc. and recommends 6- Wi-Fi devices or allows 6-users to access the internet on a shared network.
  • Premium Routers: This router allows maximum 8-users to internet access and rest features are like the basic router.
  • High-Performance Routers: It follows the next generation Wi-Fi standards and allows more than 10 devices simultaneously. Apart of basic routers and premium routers, it also allows the multi-device streaming.
